Zee, who has storm chased since college has a genuine passion for the atmosphere and a dedication to getting young people interested in science. She began her career at WLAV FM/ WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From 2003-2005, Zee worked at WEYI NBC 25 in Flint, MI. Before that assignment, Zee worked at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI where she part of the Storm Team 8, also covering the environment, science and the impact of weather throughout West Michigan. Prior to joining ABC News, she was a meteorologist at NBC station WMAQ-Channel 5 in Chicago from 2006-2011, also filling in for several NBC and MSNBC News programs. Plus, skydiving, ice boat racing and surfing live on GMA. She has gone para-hawking in Nepal, flown a drone into the fissure of a volcano in Iceland, hiked the largest cave in the world in Vietnam, para-glided from the Himalayas to the Andes, dove with sharks in the Bahamas, rappelled 27 stories down the exterior façade of the Wit Hotel in Chicago. Her love of adventure has taken her and ABC News viewers across the world. Zee’s passion does not stop with storm chasing. In 2016, Zee covered Hurricane Matthew and its path along the east coast. In 2013, she covered extreme weather conditions ranging from the Boston blizzard to the record-breaking heat in Death Valley. She broadcasted from the devastated Jersey Shore during Hurricane Sandy, the Colorado floods and wildfires, and covered the aftermath from tornadoes in Moore and El Reno, Oklahoma. Since joining ABC News, Zee has covered almost every major weather event and dozens of historic storms. Previously she was the meteorologist for “Good Morning America Weekend.” Additionally, Zee hosts an ABC News original digital series “Food Forecast.” Ginger recently admitted that she needed professional psychological help because she realized she "needed to get to the bottom of the depression" that had affected her for nearly twenty years and understood "that it was time to commit to getting healthy." Since working with the professional, Ginger reports, "Life has never been the same in the best way, thanks to the simple exercises he taught me, and I am committed to practicing them.Ginger Zee is the chief meteorologist at ABC News, reporting on the nation’s weather on “Good Morning America” and across ABC News broadcasts and digital platforms. Ginger is very vocal about this problem and is a member of "Wake Up Narcolepsy," a non-profit organization that helps people afflicted with the disorder. This is a lifelong disorder, and the fact that Ginger has managed to build up her successful career while battling this condition is a testament to her inner strength. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by an extreme tendency to fall asleep when in relaxing surroundings. ![]() When she was 22, Ginger was diagnosed with narcolepsy and depression. Ginger has had many successes in her life however, she has also been faced with her share of challenges. When Champion's show was canceled, her forecast for him on national television was, "Cloudy, with a 100% chance of sunshine." Health Zee and Champion share a perfect relationship, as her immediate predecessor, and she credits him for mentoring her. During her maternity leave, Champion filled in for her after the birth of her son, Adrian, in January 2015. Ginger succeeded veteran Sam Champion in the role. Subsequent appearances on "Nightline" and "ABC World News" followed, and in 2013, ABC News announced that she would become the Chief Meteorologist for "Good Morning America" and the Weather Editor for ABC News. In 2011, she made her first appearance on "Good Morning America Weekend," which gave her national prominence.
